Renowned flamenco artists win Spanish Arts Award

MADRID (AP) — Two renowned personalities from the world of flamenco, singer Carmen Linares and choreographer-dancer María Pagés, received one of Spain’s most prestigious fine arts awards on Thursday.

The jury for the annual Princess of Asturias Awards praised the two women, both from southern Spain, for their massive influence on the art form over the past decades.

“In Carmen Linares and María Pagés converge the spirit of several generations who, while respecting the tradition and deep roots of flamenco, have modernized and adapted its essence to the contemporary world,” the organizers said in a statement.

Carmen Linares is the stage name of Carmen Pacheco Rodríguez. Famous for her expressive voice, the 71-year-old singer was one of the first flamenco singers to perform at Lincoln Center in New York, organizers said.

María Pagés, 59, is said to have started dancing at the age of four. She founded her dance company in 1990, quickly carving out a unique space for herself at the forefront of flamenco.

The two artists will share the 50,000 euro ($52,700) prize, one of eight Asturias prizes awarded each year by a foundation named in honor of Spain’s Crown Princess Leonor. Other categories include social sciences, sports and scientific research.
