CEID reopens for in-person operations, shortened schedule


On Monday, the Center for Engineering Innovation and Design reopened for in-person programming.

As classes resume in-person instruction this week, the Yale Center for Engineering Innovation and Design — the university’s hub for engineering resources — has resumed its usual daily rhythm.

CEID remained open for face-to-face operations until the end of the fall semester, but the facility was closed for the first two weeks of that term and reopened last Monday. According to Design Fellows Veronica Chen ’22 and Audrey Ryan GRD ’21, the CEID team used the free time to plan workshops and activities for the rest of the year.

“After a long year of remote learning and programming, CEID was fortunate to remain open throughout the Fall 21 semester,” Ryan and Chen wrote in an email to the News. “There is a very strong sense of community here at CEID, so all of our members and staff have adhered to University guidelines to ensure the common area can remain open safely. Fortunately, no programming or classes were interrupted during Omicron’s peak late last semester. While we were closed, CEID staff took advantage of the winter vacation period to prepare, restock and organize for a successful spring semester!

For the remainder of its first week back to in-person operations, CEID will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., by Ryan and Chen. They added that they were working with CEID’s design aides, who are undergraduate staff, to determine a work schedule that will allow them to “quickly transition to 24/7 access.” .

This spring, CEID will offer weekly workshops on Wednesday evenings for the Yale community, and it will host three design-based courses: “Musical Acoustics and Instrument Design”, “Design Process and Creative Strategies”, and “Design and innovation of medical devices”.

Tamar Geller ’23, who serves as co-chair of Yale’s student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, or IEEE, expressed her excitement at the reopening of CEID. Geller majors in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and is currently enrolled in the CEID Medical Device Design course.

“I am very pleased that CEID is reopening both because I am taking a medical device design course that meets at CEID,” Geller wrote in an email to the News, “and because many project teams Y-IEEE waited for CEID to open so they could solder parts and finish building their projects!

CEID also operates a newsletter, serving as a means for the Yale engineering community to advertise internships and share course information. For example, CEID’s most recent newsletter highlighted a research position for undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Medicine, a set of virtual workshops on sustainable health, and other potential opportunities in technical entrepreneurship.

“The project [with Yale School of Medicine professor Aidin Elsam Pour] consists of making a 3D model of the human body (skeleton, joints and muscles) to study its movements,” reads the latest newsletter. “The project team already has a model that can be used as a model to build on. This project can lead to significant experience in coding and computational modeling of human movements.

Chen and Ryan’s roles include coordinating events, providing equipment training and supporting CEID projects. They also manage Design Aids, which offer technical guidance to other students using CEID tools and resources.

The two also use some of their time working with CEID to hone their own technical skills — and to pursue their own professional interests. For Ryan, this involves cross-disciplinary projects that combine technology and art.

“As a recent graduate of the Art School’s Master of Fine Arts, I have been very pleased to assist current Art School students with their upcoming Spring Thesis shows and reviews. “, wrote Ryan. “During the period of CEID closure, Veronica and I continued to respond to specialist printing requests and provide remote assistance to students who needed it. Helping other artists has always been an integral part of my own practice as an artist and I really look forward to seeing all the upcoming exhibitions!

Similar to Ryan, Chen has also expressed interest in the intersection of art and technology.

Although she’s been involved with CEID for much of her time at Yale, Chen – who graduated from Yale College in December – noted that this was her first semester as a Design Fellow. .

“I was a design assistant last semester and have been taking classes at CEID since my sophomore year, so CEID has always felt like a familiar space,” she wrote. “I was a double major in art and mechanical engineering, and I’m passionate about making things, which is what drew me to this role. I love how CEID embodies both engineering and design.

Chen is hosting her first workshop next week, where she will cover Adobe Animate multimedia graphics software.

CEID is located at 15 Prospect St. and opened in 2012.
